Welcome to the website for my book, Pronouncing Shakespeare.

I had wanted to issue a CD with this book, to illustrate what Shakespeare’s Globe called ‘original pronunciation’ (OP), but the production costs went against it. Fortunately, the Web allows access to audio material in a way that would not have been possible a few years ago. An extract from Romeo and Juliet was made available for the first edition of the Shakespeare’s Words website, but the construction of this portal provides an opportunity to present OP more systematically. On this page, therefore, you can hear four examples of OP read by me: two sonnets, a short extract from Romeo and Juliet, and a longer extract from Troilus and Cressida.

Many thanks for visiting,

David Crystal
